The Old Bakery
The Old Bakery project involves a modest ground-floor extension that links a historic house, once one of Brighton’s bakeries, with a small donkey stable located in the garden. This extension and the refurbishment of the stable create an extended living room and a bathroom, along with improved garden access.
The vision for this project is subtle yet thoughtful, aiming to enhance the character of the existing property. The barn, an important feature of the property, is retained and refurbished, then sensitively connected to the house, creating a cohesive flow between the old and the new. This concept design allowed to ensure accessibility and comfort without compromising the character of the building.
One of the project’s technical challenges lies in the foundation, with the old bakery oven residing in the basement. This necessitates the use of a rafter foundation for the extension, a solution that respects the integrity of the building while ensuring stability and safety.
Additionally, the project provides accessibility to the garden and patio via a composite ramp and balustrade wire, allowing the client to enjoy the bucolic character of the outdoor space, enhancing the connection between the interior and the serene surroundings.
Throughout the process, we worked closely with the client, ensuring that their wishes were fully understood. The goal was to preserve the property’s history while also providing the client with the living space they need to continue enjoying the home they love. The project is intentionally modest, designed to be discreet, enhancing the property without overwhelming it. The result is a refined solution that respects both the physical and emotional connection the client has to their home, while providing them with a functional, accessible space to enjoy for years to come.
